Salt Lake City – This year’s midterm election could flip control of the Salt Lake County Council from Republican to Democratic hands.
Republicans currently have a narrow 5-4 majority on the nine-seat council. However, four of those seats _ including the only one that represents the entire county — are up for election this year.
Four candidates are running for the countywide seat, Salt Lake County Council At-Large District A.
Who’s running for the seat?
Kathleen Anderson became the Republican nominee for the seat after beating out incumbent council member Laurie Stringham at the Salt Lake County GOP nominating convention in April.
Anderson is a local business owner and has lived in Salt Lake County for over 30 years.
She ran unsuccessfully in the special election to replace Rep. Chris Stewart following his resignation in 2022.
According to her campaign website, she is running to “bring common sense, accountability, and taxpayer respect back to County Hall.”
Anderson wants to launch a review of the county’s services to identify any outdated or redundant services that can be cut to reduce spending and avoid a tax increase.
She faces Democrat Zach Robinson, a former Sandy City council member and current University of Utah Health worker.
According to Robinson’s campaign website, he is running “because we need leadership that focuses on public service: facing tough challenges head-on, listening, and solving problems.”
Robinson’s website lists his priorities as making the county more affordable, taking care of the environment, and making the county a safer place to live.
Rounding out the ballot are Constitution Party candidate Gregory Belgarian and Utah Forward Party candidate Maleah Bliss Caulford, a business owner and networking app co-founder who ran unsuccessfully for Utah Senate District 11 in 2025.
The race for the Salt Lake County Council At-Large District A seat is just one of over 100 in Utah this year.
